KVK in English: the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce
· Checked against the sources below by the Netto team.
KVK (Kamer van Koophandel) is the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce. It keeps the Dutch business register: every business, freelancers included, registers there before it starts, and gets a KVK number of eight digits.
What registering gives you
- A KVK number, which must be on every invoice you send, next to your name and address.
- Your VAT numbers: KVK passes your registration to the Belastingdienst, which sends you a VAT ID (btw-id) and a VAT tax number (omzetbelastingnummer).
- An extract (uittreksel) from the register, which banks and clients may ask for.
Worked example
Ana registers her eenmanszaak at a KVK office in October. Her invoice to a Dutch client then shows: her business name and address, her KVK number, her VAT ID, the invoice number and date, and the amount with 21% VAT.
The steps, the documents to bring and the appointment are in the KVK registration guide.
