Prepare, file and pay your VAT return
How Netto prepares your quarterly VAT return, how you file it with the Belastingdienst, and what happens after.
Netto keeps your VAT (BTW) return up to date as you work. At the end of each quarter you check it, copy the figures into the Belastingdienst's website, and mark it as filed.
The VAT page
VAT shows the year at a glance. At the top is the quarter that needs you now, with the amount and the deadline. Below, each quarter shows the state of its VAT return, its Payment and, if you sold to businesses elsewhere in the EU, its ICP return.
Is this amount right? lists what could still change the figures: bank lines not matched yet, payments set aside, draft invoices, missing receipts, and paid bills not found in your bank. Sort these out before you file.
File the return
A quarter can be filed once it has ended. Open it with Review and file, then:
- Review: check the boxes (1a, 1b, 1e, 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b) and the points under Before you file.
- Copy to form: tap a figure to copy it. Amounts are in whole euros, rounded in your favour, as the Belastingdienst allows.
- Open Mijn Belastingdienst Zakelijk, sign in, and enter each figure in the same box.
- After you've submitted it there, come back and press I've submitted it, then Mark as filed.
Nothing sold or bought in a quarter? You still have to file, with zero in every box. Netto tells you when that's the case.
Coming soon: filing straight from Netto, without copying figures. Netto has applied for access to the Belastingdienst's filing system (Digipoort). Until then, you file in Mijn Belastingdienst Zakelijk.
The CSV and XML buttons download a summary of the return for your own records or your accountant. They can't be uploaded to the Belastingdienst.
What "filed" means
Marking a quarter as filed locks it: invoices and costs dated in that quarter can no longer change, so your books keep matching what you told the Belastingdienst. If you find a mistake, Reopen unlocks the quarter in Netto. To correct the return itself, you send a correction (suppletie) to the Belastingdienst.
Pay the VAT
The quarter shows how to pay, with the payment reference (betalingskenmerk) the Belastingdienst needs. When the payment shows up in your bank lines, Netto offers it on the Bank page as the payment for that quarter. Match it, and the quarter shows as paid on the date the money left your account.
Using the KOR
If you use the small business scheme (KOR), turn on Registered for the KOR under Settings → VAT. Netto then leaves VAT off your invoices. On the VAT page, Netto warns you as your revenue gets close to the €20,000 limit. See The small business scheme (KOR): you register for it yourself at the Belastingdienst first.
